This simple song came into my head again this Autumnal Equinox season. There is a quality of balance in it aligning with the time of year. I have enjoyed humming it in the work of the day with the children. In adult groups with colleagues and parents it is nicely sung as a round.
Through Waldorf Education we know that the Sense of Balance is one of the four foundational senses for the young child's full development as they take on the ways of their life.
Here included is an image that supports this sense from our garden play time. A soft, enfolding, hammock set close in, and a rocking horse "waiting place". (All good hammock swings need a good "waiting place".)
Exploring the theme of Balance further, I am reminded from work with Kathleen Lockyer (Rx Outside) that the Vestibular system is about orienting and that real connection with the natural world offers the best opportunities for our senses.
"Vestibular is involved with more complicated motion and provides what is referred to as 'absolute position of your body in space.' McCredie, S. (2007)....
The reason nature connection activity habilitates and rehabilitates people is that it offers the most numerous and varied opportunities for adaptation. The affordances nature provides are really just opportunities to interact and expand our capacity through making meaning of a sensory-motor experience. "
